VNC® (Virtual Network Computing) is a remote desktop system created by AT&T Laboratories Cambridge. It uses the platform-neutral Remote Framebuffer (RFB) protocol to let a “viewer” display and control the desktop of a remote computer over a network. By operating at the framebuffer level, VNC is inherently cross-platform: the same viewer can connect to servers running on Windows, Unix/Linux, and other operating systems, making it useful for remote administration, help desk support, telecommuting, and accessing headless machines.

The original AT&T release emphasized simplicity, small footprint, and interoperability. A lightweight server sends screen updates, while the viewer returns keyboard and mouse input, with a range of encodings to optimize performance over low-bandwidth links. The project also popularized a Java-based viewer for browser access and inspired a broad ecosystem of compatible implementations and enhancements. While the classic protocol provides password-based authentication, session encryption is typically added via secure tunnels (such as SSH or VPN) or through later variants.

Originating in the late 1990s, VNC established a widely adopted standard for remote desktop connectivity that remains valued for its openness, portability, and straightforward design.

VNC® is developed by AT&T Laboratories Cambridge and is used by 8 users of Software Informer. The most popular versions of this product among our users are: 4.0, 5.1 and 5.2. The names of program executable files are VNC Viewer.exe, VNC-Viewer-6.0.1-Windows-64bit.exe, VNC-Viewer-6.20.113-Windows-64bit.exe, VNC-Viewer-6.20.113-Windows.exe and VNC-Viewer.exe.
